What we ask before we quote anything

Six questions, and none of them are about features. They are about who does the work now and what it costs them.

Before we give anybody a quotation, we ask six questions, and none of them start with "which features do you want." Features come later. What we need first is who does this work today, how long it takes them, what goes wrong, and how often.

The six questions cover: who does the step now, how it reaches them, what they write down twice, when it goes wrong, what happens when it does, and what it is costing in time or money when it breaks. Answering these honestly usually tells us more about what to build than any feature list would.

Why we start here

A quotation based on features can price the wrong thing entirely. A quotation based on the real cost of the current process tells both of us whether the project is worth doing at all, before either side spends money finding out.
